Internet marketing tools have evolved just as much as the search engines. Even though there are quite a few search engines, and there are hundreds, you can get software to track your progress in each of them. The amount of indexes is overwhelming but you still have to try to get in them.
Spending your time trying to get a site to rank well is surely worth the effort. Considering what can be gained, it is very important to rank high on the first page for traffic and converting your visitors to buyers.
The assumption that being on the first page is winning is a bit misguided and a variety of factors will come into play when accessing the effectiveness of the position of each listing. It is true however, that first page results will be clicked on more than second page results. But it is all about page position.
Just consider the sponsored listings which appear above organic listings. These paid advertisements dilute the organic listings and push high ranking sites down the page. This may or may not be a good thing for the person searching but for marketers, it is a problem.
When your site appears above the fold, the top 3 or 4 organic results, the paid ad may push you below the initially visible page. If a human can't see your listing right away, they have to look farther down the listings. This will not help your cause.
The SERPs also contain sponsored ads down the right side of the page. These ads compete for the click as well and reduce your traffic. It's not enough to be on the first page, you need to be above the fold in the area that is initially viewable if you are going to maximize your opportunity.
Considering there are thousands of Internet Marketers competing in hundreds of search engines for millions of keywords, getting on the first page of the SERPs is quite an impressive accomplishment in and of itself. However, if you want to win in your niche, you will absolutely need to be in the top three, it is your best chance.
